HALL OF FAME
In case you've forgotten; or even if you never knew;
baseball players and managers are not the only ones in the Hall of Fame.
On December 3, 2007 umpire Doug Harvey missed induction by one single
vote. But players, managers and umpires are not the only ones in the
Hall of Fame.Baseball executives and pioneers (Barney Dreyfuss and
Walter O' Malley and
Bowie Kuhn) are also in. Managers and umpires are elected by a 16 member
Veteran's Committee. Executives and pioneers are elected by a 12 member
Veteran's Committee. Candidates must receive at least 75% of the vote.
Walter O' Malley is the former Dodgers owner that moved the Dodgers to
Los Angeles after the 1957 season. Ex Pirates owner Barney Dreyfuss
helped bring peace between the American and National Leagues by
arranging the first World Series. Former commissioner Bowie Kuhn
introduced night games to the World Series. Managers Dick Williams and
Billy Southworth won World Series titles and were
elected on December 3, 2007. It's hard to believe that baseball pioneer
and legendary former players union chief Marvin Miller only got 25% of
the necessary 75% of the votes needed.
Hopefully he will get in on his next chance.
